As I enter the fifth decade of my life (YIKES?!!) and being a physical therapist mainly for the geriatric population, I continue to remind myself of the importance of being and staying active. I witness the struggles of my geriatric patients on a daily basis on how difficult some tasks that most people take for granted can be. Tasks like getting in and out of bed, walking to the bathroom, getting on and off the toilet become a chore. They lose their independence as they have to rely on someone to complete these tasks. While I am grateful to have the capacity to help with a little bit of their ability towards independence, I know I have to be and stay active for my own health. I strive to reflect daily on my gratitude for my health as well as my family’s health. I am grateful that I am continuing to stay active by doing things that I enjoy including playing basketball with my family, playing rec volleyball, and going walking, hiking and doing stairs with my kids. I am grateful that my husband and my kids want to be active with me and that my kids love going on walks, hiking and playing sports. As I recover from an acute neck strain probably from the ONE rollercoaster ride I rode at the OC Fair, I realize how easy someone’s health can be easily taken away. I know I need to continue to stay active to give me the best chance possible to continue to be independent and enjoying life! I do not know what I would do without being ACTIVE! Actually, I do know.. I would probably eat worse and eat more… for some reason this always happens to me!!!
